Welcome to Salem Social Service Society - A Pioneer NGO |

Organizational History
“To proclaim Liberty to the Captives” was the motivating spirit for the promoters of our organization among whom Dr. Selvanathar, the then Bishop of Salem Catholic Diocese, and his immediate subordinates and stake holders of the Church took initiatives for the formation Salem Social Service Society.

With the lofty ideal of serving to the poor and downtrodden in Salem, Namakkal and Dharmapuri districts which together formed the Salem Diocese then, the Salem Social Service Society was registered under Societies Registration in 1968.
With a view to equip it with necessary legal capacity and competency, Salem Social Service Society was registered under Foreign Contributions Regulation Act in 1985. Later, we got exemption from Income Tax under 80G of Indian IT Act. 1961
Within the frame work of the above Constitutional Provisions, Salem Social Service Society has ever been rendering its services with out prejudices to Caste, creed, Reglion etc. Salem Social Service Society has been a valuable member in the Regional Net Work of Tamil Nadu Social Service Society (TASOSS) Now it has been functioning in association with District and Union Level Government Departments / Agencies and about with twenty NGOs / People’s Organizations.
After the bifurcation of Dharmapuri as a separate diocese, at present, the Salem Social Service Society is making its social intervention in Salem and Namakkal districts. |

Geographical Area |
| |
|
Salem Diocese occupies a vast area comprising of Salem and Namakkal districts: Being hill locked on all sides, its main source of water is only from the river Cauvery which too benefit the farmers on the river bank belt in both the civil districts |
| |
Topography and Cultivation: |
| |
|
Black soil and Red soil predominantly form the top soil layer in our operational area which support dry land cultivation. Well irrigation is the most common practice in the interior area where, Paddy, Sugar cane, Tapioca, Plantain, Cotton and Groundnut are cultivated the principal crops.
As a major part of the cultivable lands depend on monsoon rains, the Marginal and Small farmers find it difficult to earn for their livelihood. |
| |
Issues and Problems intervened: |

Area to be focused on (In the days to come): |
| |
|
CHILD education CARE and their sustainable Development Programme |
| |
Justification of the CHILDCARE AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME: |
| |
Since it is the only area n which Salem Social Service Society has not made much initiatives and efforts despite the pressing needs felt all around and among our target people.
It is note worthy to mention that no other NGO has been taking up the Children’s issues keenly in our area. Further, most of the parents especially the target villagers are helpless to provide better Child Hood to their Children due to their perpetuated poverty and backward conditions. |
